Las Vegas 2006 Recap

May 30th, 2006

The SD White Sox rebounded from a slow start to put together a solid 2-1-1 Las Vegas Tourney, finishing in a 2nd place tie in pool play. For standings/scores, visit the NABA website.

Game Recaps

Games 2 and 3 had some of the most exciting finishes I have seen. In the second game vs. the SoCal Indians, we gave up 8 runs in the top of the 9th to turn a 6-2 lead into a 10-6 deficit. The team rallied in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game 10-10. The winning rally: Donavan (hit), Jim (hit), Dan (hit), Gus (BB), Lance (hit), Art (2 RBI hit). Had Terry not been called out on a close play at first on an infield chopper (replays show he was clearly safe), there’s a good chance we would have won the game with the bases juiced and Zoo in the on-deck circle. Aside from the finish, the highlight of the game was a towering grand slam by Ruppert in the 4th inning. Depending on who you talk to, the shot either landed on the street 50 feet beyond the fence or bounced off the top of it… regardless, it was a monster shot.

The comeback in the third game was equally amazing. In the top of the 9th, the Sox rallied from a 9-4 deficit to punch across 6 runs vs. the Orange County Cubs. The winning rally: Bruce (hit), Ruppert (hit), Jim (hit), Mo (hit), Zoo (hit), Regan (hit), Dan (BB), Bob (E6), Gus (BB). The last 7 ABs and all 6 runs took place with 2 outs. Bob finished a complete game gem (8/9 of the runs were unearned), retiring the side, in order, to close out the game. Bruce threw a 2-hit gem in the final game and the bats came alive for a lopsided 17-0 victory. The defense also came together (finally) with just one error on a tough chance at first. It was a solid team effort in a game we knew we needed to have a chance to advance to the final. The big shot of the day was a monster home run by Regan.

Unfortunately, we lost the tie-breaker to the SoCal Indians, giving up 4 more runs for the tourney. In the end, we paid the price for too many defensive lapses in the infield.

Pitching/Defense

We got excellent pitching all weekend from our starters: Bruce, Bob, Art, and Regan…. I figure that maybe 8-10 of the 33 runs we gave up were earned. We also had excellent work behind the plate by Bob, Bruce, Lance, and Mo. Despite too many, uh, defensive lapses, we had quality outfield play all weekend (just one error and a couple of web gems) from Donavan, Regan, Terry, Lance, myself and a couple others who filled in. We got strong utility play from Jim (no errors) and Lance, who played every field position except first base.

Hitting

I figured this team would hit, and we did, top to bottom. As a team, we hit .376 and had a .478 OBA. In all, 10 players reached base at a better than .400 clip. Ruppert Rosas led the team with a .635 On Base Average and tied with Gus and Bob with a .500 batting average for best of the tourney.

Player AVG OBA Hits BB HR (sorted by OBA)
Ruppert 0.500 0.625 6 4 1
Zoo 0.444 0.583 4 3 0
Dan 0.400 0.571 4 4 0
Gus 0.500 0.538 6 1 0
Bob 0.500 0.538 6 1 0
Art 0.364 0.500 4 3 0
Regan 0.364 0.500 4 3 1
Mo 0.385 0.467 5 2 0
Jim 0.462 0.462 6 0 0
Lance 0.333 0.429 4 2 0

Mike also reached base in 2/3 chances before being sidelined by injury.

Rubio’s Most Valuable Player

In a photo finish, Bob Ambrose takes home MVP honors with a strong complete game win on the hill, outstanding work at shortstop and behind the plate, and a .500 batting average for the tourney. Honorable mention goes to Ruppert Rosas with his grand slam and team leading OBA, and Regan Furcolo for his outstanding bat, pitching, and defensive play. Thanks to Jim McGaha, I’ve got $50 worth of Rubio’s gift certificates for Bob and $20 each for the runner ups.

Additional Notes from Las Vegas:

  • Ruppert wins the “Babe Ruth/Fernando Portillo” Weekend Warrior award, leading the team in batting and fewest hours slept. The two hours of sleep he got between games on Monday where reportedly the longest stretch he had all weekend. Honorable mention goes to Bob/Jim who elevated the party at the Hard Rock/Double Down to the next level when they passed on a 1 pm cab ride to continue clubbing at a local, uh, “adult entertainment” establishment. Unfortunately, I can’t say more out of respect for the the whole “what happens in Vegas…” thing.
  • We once again had the loosest, funniest dugout in Vegas with Fernando (MoTown) Portillo at the top of his game. Nobody was spared Mo’s barbs on teammates, opposing players, umpires, farm animals, midgets, and transvestites. Honorable mention to Bruce (WildPitch) Stone, who likely would have been the funniest guy in any other dugout last weekend.
  • Closing Thoughts

Finally, I’d like to prop myself for putting together a “dream team” of outstanding men and ballplayers and having enough sense to just roll out the ball and let you play the way I know you can. As always, my goal in these things is to get the best players I can who fit into the system. In other words, I try to compensate for a profound lack of managerial brilliance by getting quality guys and staying out of the way. As much as I would have liked to bring home the hardware this weekend, and as sure as I am that we could have, I am proud of the effort put forth by this team, the camraderie on and off the field, and pleased with our play. We can all feel good about the way we represented the SDABL 28aa division this weekend. I look forward to seeing you on the field soon.

Sox Lose to SD Heat 8-4

    May 4th, 2006

A little rust was evident offensively as we dropped our first game in a month to the Heat 8-4. Zoo got hit hard early, but finished strongly and pitched well enough for seven innings to get the win, if we had hit like we can. Bruce finished the game with a strong 8th inning.

Overall, we played good defense, especially given the long layoff, with just one error.

    Batting

There were a couple of solid performances with Bob going 2/2 (sac), Bruce 2/3 HR, and team OBA leader Dan H. getting on base 2/3.

White Sox Winless No “Mo”, Beat the Wildcats 15-3

    April 3rd, 2006

Even without Mo Wrighten, one of the league’s most feared hitters, the Pacific GMP White Sox picked up the first win, 15-3 vs. the Wildcats.

    Pitching

Gabe got the complete game win, allowing just two earned runs over 7 innings. Gabe also got an RBI single in his only at-bat.

    Hitting

Several Sox had big games at the plate:

    • Jeff - reached base 3/4 with an HR.
    • Jahil - 3/4, two doubles, two RBI
    • Gary - 2/4, two RBI
    • Zoo - went 2/3 and reached base 3/4
    • Dan D. - 3/4, RBI
    • Dan H. - reached base 2/4
    • Jim - 3/4, two RBI

    Defense

The middle infield was solid with Jared and Tim both having good games. Kevin also had a strong game at third.

All in all, a great day at the yard. Next week is a bye… see you in a couple of weeks.

Recap 3/5/05 - 20-9 Loss to the Black Sox

    March 6th, 2006

The Sox dropped our second game of the season to the Black Sox, 20-9. Five home runs by the Black Sox was the difference in the game.

    Highlights

    Hitting

Congrats to Mike Gross for a huge 2nd inning grand slam to close an early Black Sox lead to 2 runs. On the downside, we had 14 k’s and no walks (2 HBP).

    • Jeff - 3/4
    • Mo - 2/4
    • Tim - on-base 2/4
    • Dan - 2/3
    • Mike - grand slam!

    Defense

Defense was much better this week, with solid play at most positions.

    Pitching

It was a tough outing with five home runs allowed…. you have to give a lot of credit to the Black Sox, that is a very tough lineup, especially the first 6-7 batters.

    Upcoming

Next game is at 1:30 pm vs. the Wildcats at San Diego HS.

White Sox Drop First Game to Berry’s 13-1

    February 27th, 2006
“Fortunately it was a beautiful day at the old ball yard, and the whole team seemed to be excited to start the season.  Even a good old fashioned whippin by Berry’s 28s couldn’t dim that fact that Spring Season started this last Sunday.  However, may not get another game till April, the way the weather looks.  We showed a lot on Sunday, a lot of rust, a lot of humor, a lot of embarrassment, but it was still a good day.  Jahil and Jeff had strong games at the plate, as did Zoo and Dan Hrigora - or Dano as he is now known, to differentiate him from the other 6 Dans on the team.
Zoo and Gabe did some nice work on the mound, only a few pitches they’d like back (yes Zoo, that is the same guy who barely hit that HR at Helix a few years back!).  There was some strong D at times  - particularly Mo at 3rd, Gabe at short, and Jahil showed how much he loves the OF by turning into Charlie Hustle, thus locking down that permanent move to LF, sorry dude.  We’ll get some O reinforcements with Tim next week, and the rust should be gone, we hope.
All in all, its great to be Spring, and its great to be playing ball again”

    28AA PacificGMP White Sox

    February 4th, 2006

    Gentlemen,

Roster Our current roster is at 16-players. We’d ideally like to carry around 13-14 full-time players with a goal of having 11-13 players at every game. This is a number that Gary and I are comfortable with to allow everyone plenty of playing time and at-bats while still having adequate coverage for the unexpected. If all 16 of us sign on for the season, we will start with 16 and not replace anyone who leaves the team until we get down to 13-14 players. Here is our current full-time roster:

    • 1. Gary Pierce
    • 2. Gabe Samrock
    • 3. Tim Miller
    • 4. Jeff Zeidma
    • 5. Dan Hrigora
    • 6. James “Zoo” Sawicki
    • 7. Jahil Nelson
    • 8. Dan Darrin
    • 9. Jim McGaha
    • 10. Bob Ambrose
    • 11. Mike Gross
    • 12. Dan Harrison
    • 13. Mo Wrighten
    • 14. Joe Burdo
    • 15. Kevin Flowers
    • 16. Jared Hanum

Bruce Stone will also be playing with us on a limited basis at first with an objective of having him ready for the stretch run and playoffs. This is a lineup with depth at every position, including pitcher. We also should be a very strong hitting club.

    Management

Gary Pierce is the Manager. He has the final say on the lineup, pitching rotation, roster, etc. and all game day decisions. I will be assisting him this season by keeping team stats, updating the website, communications, and helping to put together the game day lineup. I will also sub for Gary as manager, should he have to miss any games. Gary and I both believe in sharing management responsibility… there is a lot to do on game day, including coaching bases, keeping book, substitutions, warming up pitchers, etc. We hope everyone will pitch in and make this go as smoothly as possible.

It is our goal to be a well-organized ballclub with a minimum of administrative effort both on and off the field. As such, our primary means of communicating with the team will be email and the team website: http://www.bats1.com. You are expected to notify us in advance if you can’t make a game. The lineup will be made out in advance of the game (usually the night before) to assure a smooth game day preparation. It is very important that you let us know, in advance, any time you will be unable to make a game or of any other considerations (e.g. late arrival, injury, etc). The preferred method of communicating this is via email to both Gary and myself.

    Finances

The breakdown of fees for the 17-game season (plus playoffs) works out to $185 per man, paid in advance or $200 at the season opener. This figure is based on our estimate of registration fees, umpires, game balls, and other costs. If our estimate comes up short, the team will cover the difference, you won’t be asked for more money. If we generate a surplus, this will be a first for either of us… we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. You may pay your fees by Credit Card or Paypal via the following link: http://www.bats1.com/finance. The best way to secure your place on this ballclub is to pay your fees right now. At about $10 per game, White Sox Baseball represents one of the best entertainment values around. If you need to leave the team over the course of the season due to a job relocation, etc., we will give you a pro-rated refund of your fees.

    Registration

All players must register with the SDABL at the league website. Go to http://www.sdabl.com/teams/playerregistration.php and fill in your information. You will receive an email with a confirmation number. Forward the email to Gary and he’ll add you to the roster. Practice /Scrimmages We will have our first practice Sunday, February 12 (time/place TBD). We will have a practice game vs. the Sting, Sunday, February 19, at El Cajon High. We will probably schedule a couple of optional batting practice sessions at the Bullpen, in Chula Vista (http://www.mvpbaseballacademy.com). Watch your email and visit our website (http://www.bats1.com) for updated information.
