Black Sox drop close one to Mighty 1090 4-2

Black Sox Welcome Fernando "Mo" Portillo and "Mighty 1090"

A tough loss to a good team as the Black Sox drop one 4-2 vs. the "Mighty 1090." After the game, the home plate umpire told me he doesn't get to umpire many SDABL games as good as this one. The game featured excellent pitching and defense for both teams.

Highlights:

Pitching - Bob threw 5 innings of excellent ball, allowing just 4 runs in the fourth inning after a near-strikeout on a check swing (I thought he went). Gus was also excellent, throwing four shutout innings against his old team. Great job by both our pitchers.
Hitting - We had 6 hits, 4 walks, and 1 HBP. We also stole 5 bases. Individual highlights:
Juan - on-base 2/3.
Mike Gray - 2/3 hitting for the team's top hitter. One word for anyone looking to improve his hitting - "Hitaway"
Dan - on-base 2/3.
Defense - we continue to play strong defense. Hand it to the opposition too, they made some great plays on the left side of the infield and didn't give us anything.

Team Leaders

Five (5) games into the season, Mike Gray leads the Black Sox with a sizzling .556 Batting Average and also a .556 OBA - who needs to walk when you can slap singles off balls at the eyes? Juan is close behind at .526. The top five:

1 M. Gray 0.556 0.556
2 Juan 0.471 0.526
3 Dan 0.389 0.450
4 Bob 0.333 0.400
5 Alex 0.385 0.385

Upcoming

Next week we play the Cardinals (formerly the Orioles) at 1 pm at Otay Ranch. This is another big game against a tough (4-1) opponent. We'll also plan on practicing at 9 am at Eastlake HS.

Again, good game guys, especially Bob and Gus. Even though we're not winning yet, we are headed in the right direction.
