Black Sox Recap - Sunday
6/1/03
It is great to be on the plus side
of .500 again! Yesterdays 11-6 win over the South Coast
Padres moves our season record to 5-4 and puts us in
the middle of the playoff picture.
Highlights:
- Lance Jordan pitched
7 excellent innings, allowing just 4 runs (0 earned),
in picking up the win. It is great to see Lance getting
his mid-season form with excellent movement on his
curveball and knuckleball. Lance also helped himself
out with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and a great diving
stab at first base late in the game..
- Although we did have some errors
in the infield, there were some outstanding defensive
plays including excellent catches by Bob and Phil.
Mike Gross also gave a strong outing at catcher.
- Hitting/baserunning:
We managed 15 hits and several stolen bases. Highlights:
• Dan
– 3 for 5, 2 stolen bases.
• Phil
– 3 for 4.
• Rickey
– 2 for 4.
• Lance –
2 for 4.
• Pedro
– 2 for 4.
Pedro Jorge Award:
The first ever Pedro Jorge Award for
Gutsy Performance goes to (who else) Pedro Jorge. Less
than 48 hours after Vasectomy surgery, Pedro batted
2 for 4 and prompted the comment from the dugout (Mike
Gross): “Hey, if he can hit right after a vasectomy,
the rest of us should be able to.”
On Base Averages:
I have finally set up a program to
calculate batting averages and on-base percentage. On
an ongoing basis, I will publish on-base percentage
leaders on the website. Why on-base percentage and not
batting average? Because on-base percentage is much
more important. Says who? Billy
Beane, GM of the Oakland A’s – the best
GM in baseball, in my opinion.
The following Black Soxhave on-base
percentages of better than .400:
Steve P. .611
Nestor .590
Pedro .542
Jim W. .526
Lance .482
Phil .472
Dan .455
Rickey .417
I would ask everyone to take this
with a grain of salt… we’ve only played
9 games which is not enough at-bats to draw too many
conclusions. Everyone is within striking distance of
the .400 mark, and no-one is below .300. More than anything,
this confirms what I already knew: we are a good-hitting
team from top to bottom.
If you want to know what your individual
marks for Batting Average and OBP are, send me an email.
Upcoming:
We have a very big day coming up this
Sunday, June 8 as we play a double-header at Steele
Canyon HS versus the Rebels and the Pacific Coast Sox.
Please let me know ASAP of any injuries or if you are
not going to be able to make the games.
4th of July Tournament:
Several of you have expressed an interest
in the July 4 tournament. Confirmed are: myself, Mike
Gross, Mike Garrison, with a number of “maybe’s”.
If you are interested in playing, please let me know
ASAP – we will likely be teaming up with the 29A
Pirates to form a team. Cost is $85, with a guaranteed
3 games and possibly fourth for a championship.
All-Star Game:
Our All-Star game will be held
Wednesday, June 18, time and place TBA. I assume this
will be an evening game. We will be able to send 2 or
3 players, depending on our position in the standings
after next week's games. Bob and I will make the final
decision on our team representatives.
