Black
Sox Recap - Sunday 5/18/03 We
played well enough to get a 6-3 win over the Padres.
Even though we didn't hit for power like we did the
week before we got good pitching and generally good
defense.
The win evens our record at 4-4 as
we approach the midpoint of the season. Going into the
season as a new team, we set the goal of being competitive.
I think we are well on our way to achieving that. Now,
it is time to re-evaluate that goal and start thinking
about what we need to do to get into the playoffs. I
think a reasonable goal would be to win at least 6 of
our last 9 games. This would give us 10 wins for the
season and a good chance to qualify for the playoffs.
Then, as we all know, anything can happen...
Team Highlights
- Black Sox Pitching:
3 runs (2 earned) over 9 innings.
- Hitting: all but
three players got hits against one of the better pitchers
we have faced.
Individual Highlights
• Two great streaks
came to an end: Pedro Jorge's
season long hitting streak was ended (Pedro walked twice).
Lance Jordan also failed to get hit
by a pitch for the first time this season. We are looking
for both guys to get back on track next game.
• It was just another day at
the office for Nestor Rosas: 2 for
3, Triple.
• Mike Garrison:
Pitched four shutout innings and helped himself at the
plate with two hits.
• Ricky Flores
made the play of the game: a diving stop of a hard hit
line drive to get a critical forceout at third.
• Bob Ambrose:
Picked off two runners while pitching and almost got
a third from behind the plate. He also completed a rare
double-play on a strike three wild pitch. Props to Lance
on a nice throw home.
• Mike Gross:
Double.
General
Thanks to everyone for pitching in
on the barbeque after the game. No game next week for
Memorial Day weekend, then we crank it up again June
1 vs. the South Coast Padres, 1 pm Sweetwater High School.
Everyone have a great Memorial Day
