No Way Dudes!

Way. "The Dudes" Deal Black Sox 10-8 Heartbreaker!

Well Dudes, we came up a little short on this one. We got the tying run to 2nd base with no outs in the bottom of the 9th and just couldn't get the job done. Still, we battled well in a closely contested game with many excellent plays on both sides, ultimately losing a close game to a good team with some of our key players missing. No reason for anyone to hang their heads.

Highlights:

There were many fine performances by Black Sox players highlighted by some of the best pitching we've gotten this season:

  • Chad Smith and Jonathan Walsh pitched a solid 9 innings marred only by a couple of huge home runs by the opponents and a couple of "curious" umpiring decisions. No excuses, but we didn't get our share of the breaks in this one. It was a fine outing by both pitchers, with 9 K's combined and only 3 walks allowed... a performance even more impressive considering some noticible inconsistency in the strike zone late in the game. Enough said about that.
  • Hitting - Altogether, we recorded 12 hits, 11 base on balls, and 1 HBP and several excellent individual performances:
    • Dan (1/1) reached base on all 5 plate appearances (4 BBs).
    • Jim and Mo (3/5) reached base 3x each. Mo just missed his first HR of the season and was also robbed of possible extra bases by an excellent diving snag by the opponent's first baseman that turned into a pivotal double-play.
    • Nestor, Mike Gross, Mike Gray, and Chad (2/4, double) all reached base twice.
  • Defense - Overall, we played pretty good defense, marred only by a couple of errors in the outfield. Mike Gross gave us a really good 9 innings behind the plate.

Lowlights

  • Baserunning - We got picked off first at least 3 times. On the other hand, we stole some bases and manufactured runs... on the balance, it was probably a wash.

Looking Forward

Our game next week is at 1 pm, San Diego HS vs. the Pirates. I'll probably try and set up BP on Saturday for those who can attend.
