'03 MVP Refuses to Join Postgame BBQ after Controversial Strikeout

“You represent a shred of dignity in what we would call a dismal season, so do me a favor and don’t screw this up”

-Steve P. to Mike Gray, standing on third representing the winning run in the 9th inning.

In a gutty performance, the Black Sox put together 19 hits on way to a gritty, come-from-behind (3x) win vs. the Fighting Hellfish.

Highlights

  • Hitting - We had 19 hits and our first 2 HR game of the season. This was even more impressive given our new, improved, scortched-earth scorekeeping that actually charges opponents for errors. It was a TOTAL team effort as 11 of 12 batters had hits. Individual highlights:
    • Nestor and Jim McGaha both hit Home Runs. All home runs are big, but Jim's was especially big, pulling us to within one run in the 8th. Nestor also chipped in with the game winning sacrifice fly.
    • Steve P. reached base 3/4 with two hits and a walk. He would have undoubtedly reached base all four times except for a called third strike that most (but not all) observers felt was high.
    • Phil 2/4 with a double.
    • Mo 3/4 (double).
    • Mike Gray 3/4 with the game winning run.
    • Mike Gross 3/4 with 3 doubles, including knocking in the tying run.
  • Pitching - Chad pitched 7 2/3 strong innings in "really long" middle relief. Once again, Chad was victimized by a couple of defensive miscues, for which, in a microcosm of our season, our opponent made us pay dearly. Otherwise, Chad was dominant for big parts of the game against an opponent with some very good bats in the lineup. He struck out 5 and walked one with a HBP. Jonathan pitched the last 1 1/3 inning and although hurt on a 3-run HR (a nice hit on a pretty good pitch) got the win.
  • Defense - Overall, the defense was solid. Steve P. made a nice play in center and Mo had several good stops at third. Bob had a good game behind the plate. Apologies to anyone I missed.

Lowlights

  • Are you kidding? It was our second win in a row and just the third win since Easter. More importantly, we played loose and had fun. Aside from Steve refusing to join the team for postgame BBQ, what's there to complain about?

Looking Forward

Two weeks from now we play our final game vs. the Orioles at Chula Vista HS. Everyone have a great July 4 weekend.
