Black Sox Know "Mo"!

Congratulations to Mo "Motown" Portillo and Player's Sports Bar on a 21-9 victory over the Black Sox. This evens our record at 4-4 with another tough game next week vs. Luna Construction 9 am at Otay Ranch HS. Including Luna, 7 of our first 9 games will have been against teams with winning records. After Luna, the schedule gets a little easier for a while... things probably aren't as bad as they seem. If we can get a win vs. Luna, we could be in good shape to get 4 or 5 games above .500 before the schedule gets tough again.

Highlights:

  • Nestor and Jim W. both reached base 3/4.
  • Jim McGaha hit 2/3 and reached base 3/4.
  • Rey reached base 2/3.
  • Mike Gross played strong defense in Left showing good range on a couple of tough plays.

Lowlights:

Pitching, defense, umpiring, managing, and hitting. Did I leave anything out? For the afternoon, we had only 7 hits and missed several chances for big innings. Contributing to this were 9 strikeouts, many of them with runners in scoring position. We had (at least) 5 errors and a number of mental errors. We had 4 errors in the second and third innings alone, which led to 11 unearned runs and basically cost us the ballgame. We also suffered from some bad umpire decisions on key plays in those innings. Had we played better through those innings, we would have been right in this one at the end.

Give props to the opponent, they are a strong contender in this league and took advantage of our mistakes like good teams will.

Looking Forward:

I spoke with Rickey last week. Rickey's knee feels good and he confirmed that he will be rejoining the team as soon as he is cleared by the doctors. Hopefully, this will be about the time Jim W. leaves us. Rudy is not going to be able to play this season as his recovery has pushed out until at least the end of July. Lance is more or less done for the season. This leaves us with an open position which I'd like to fill with another pitcher. I am pursuing a lead provided by Nestor on a guy who played college ball and 18 AA ball with the Barracudas. If that pans out, we're set. If not, we'll be looking to sign another player soon. A couple of you had mentioned you knew guys who might be interested in playing with us (I believe Mo and Steve), if this pitcher doesn't pan out, please remind me and we can evaluate our options. We'll want to move fairly quickly as I believe any new player will need to play in 7 games to be eligible for the playoffs.

Next week Rey and Mo will be out. This puts us down to 9 players for the game, plus Lance as an emergency sub. If anyone else won't be at the game, please let me know ASAP.
