"Poleaxes" Tecolote!
pole·ax
or pole·axe tr.v. pole·axed, pole·ax·ing,
pole·ax·es
To strike or fell with or as if with a poleax:
“When a gang of doves circled above the
flowing water and swooped in to feed, he poleaxed
the leader with a clean head shot” (William
Hoffman).
Hey guys, I learned
a new word. I think it about sums up what Steve
Pietrusza did Sunday 3/14 to Tecolote.
For the day, Steve
batted 3/3 with a double, triple, and HR. Oh,
and team guy that he is, he walked the other two
times at-bat. It was likely as good an offensive
show as we are going to see anytime soon.
Which
begs the question: What's up with Pietrusza and
the old Polish guy? OK, here's the story:
Steve sent me an email Saturday telling me he
went to the cages and stunk. Kids were making
fun of him. He wanted to know if I could put him
in a picture with Lech Walesa, the Polish labor
leader who started Solidarity and led Poland to
de-facto independence from Russia. (If you're
having trouble following this, hang on, it gets
easier).
It goes back to
our softball days when I made Lech an "Honorary
Nightcap" and Steve had another good day.
Plus, I think Steve was a little hurt by Jonathan
pointing out that Poland is always being invaded
by its technologically more advanced neighbors...
I also took the liberty of stripping Lech
into a Black Sox team picture.
Seriously though,
nice work Steve....
Highlights
Enough about Steve's
day, there were plenty of other good efforts recorded.
- Team Hitting
- Everybody got on base at least twice. I can't
recall that ever happening before. In all, we
recorded 18 hits and 12 walks in just SIX INNINGS
of hitting.
- Runs Scored
- our 22 runs was the highest total in the division
so far this season. Nestor,
Phil, Steve,
Mike G. and Jim M.
each scored three runs.
- In addition to Steve P.,
Mike G., Jonathan,
and Phil each got three hits.
- Jonathan
pitched 4 strong innings to get the win (4 innings
in a blowout is enough for a win in our book)
giving up just 3 earned runs. He also managed
to get hit by a pitch to renew his quest to
break Lance's 6-consecutive game record. The
big early lead allowed Phil and Jim M. to have
their moments in relief and Lance got a week
of rest.
- Team Defense
was much better than the past couple of weeks.
We successfully converted a
pickoff (finally!) and moved the ball around
the infield well. We also had solid play in
the outfield.
- Intangibles:
It was good to have Rudy come
out and meet everyone and hang with the team.
Welcome aboard, Rudy.
Lowlights
- I can't think of a single
thing to complain about. Even the managing
seemed improved.
- OK, one little thing... black
sleeves under the Jerseys, please.
Next Week
Things get a little tougher
the next two weeks as next week we play the Tigers
(1 pm, Silver Strand), a new team in our league
who beat SD Erosion Control 15-2 the first week
and are 3-0 for the season. The following week,
we play the Rebels, 2-0 and fresh off an 11-3
win over the Orioles. We have our work cut out
for us.
There was some talk of maybe
doing a little tailgating after the game Sunday.
Silver Strand's a nice spot, maybe we could hang
out for an hour after the game and barbeque or
get pizza or something. Let me know if interested.
